2026 ACA Study · Deep Dive Report
Companies have never had more ways to ask customers for feedback. Unfortunately, they’re also asking more often than ever. The result? Customers are tuning out. Think about how often you’re asked to complete a survey after making a purchase, contacting customer support, or even using a website. It’s no surprise that many customers simply ignore the request.
The good news is that customer feedback is still incredibly valuable. The challenge isn’t getting rid of surveys. It’s making them worth your customers’ time.
The Findings
More than half of consumers regularly ignore survey requests. It’s not because they don’t want to share feedback. They’re simply overwhelmed by the number of companies asking for it. If every interaction ends with, “Please take our survey,” customers eventually stop paying attention.
Customers are willing to answer a few questions. They’re much less willing to complete a lengthy questionnaire. The longer the survey, the lower the completion rate. If you want meaningful feedback, respect your customers’ time. Ask only what you truly need to know.
Many unhappy customers never complete a survey. They simply leave and do business with someone else. That’s why survey scores should never be your only measure of customer satisfaction. Combine survey data with customer comments, operational metrics, and direct conversations to get the full picture.
Younger customers, especially Gen Z, are more likely to provide feedback when it’s quick and built into the experience, whether that’s inside an app, through text messaging or another convenient channel. The easier you make it, the more likely customers are to respond.
One of the biggest reasons people stop responding to surveys is because they don’t believe anyone is paying attention. When customers see that their feedback leads to improvements or receive acknowledgment that they’ve been heard, they’re much more likely to engage again.
At a Glance
These findings from my latest customer service and CX research reinforce why companies should rethink their feedback strategy.
Surprising finding
The people who complete long surveys often represent the extremes, either very happy or very unhappy customers. That means companies may miss valuable feedback from the much larger group in the middle.

What This Means for You
A survey shouldn’t exist just to generate a metric. It should help you better understand your customers. Pay close attention to the comments customers leave. That’s often where you’ll find the best ideas for improving the experience.
Most companies ask too many. Instead of creating a long questionnaire, ask one or two important questions and include an opportunity for customers to share comments in their own words. You’ll likely get better participation and better insights.
One of the most effective ways to build customer loyalty is to let customers know you heard them. When feedback leads to a change, tell your customers. When someone shares a concern, acknowledge it and respond whenever possible. Customers appreciate knowing their opinions matter.
“A survey isn’t just a way to measure satisfaction. It’s an opportunity to start a conversation with your customer. If you’re not willing to listen or act on what you learn, don’t ask the question.” Shep Hyken
The Bottom Line: Surveys aren’t going away, and they shouldn’t. But customers have become much more selective about the feedback they provide. Keep surveys short. Make them easy to complete. Most important, use what you learn to improve the customer experience. When customers see their feedback makes a difference, they’ll be much more willing to share it again.
