Top Brands for Customer Experience: What We Can Learn from the Best

Every year, I ask customers to name the companies they believe deliver the best customer experience. The names change a little from year to year, but what’s interesting isn’t who makes the list. It’s why they make the list.

These companies don’t win because they have bigger budgets. They win because they’ve made it easy to do business with them. They consistently deliver on their promises, empower their employees, and remove friction wherever they can.

The Lessons

Five Lessons from the Best CX Brands

  1. 1

Amazon Continues to Set the Standard for Convenience

Whether you love Amazon or compete with them, there’s no denying they have changed customer expectations. They’ve shown customers what “easy” looks like. The lesson isn’t to become Amazon. The lesson is to ask yourself “Where can we make doing business with us easier?”

  2. 2

    Chick-fil-A Proves Consistency Beats Complexity

Customers don’t love Chick-fil-A because of one amazing experience. They love it because they know what to expect every time. Friendly employees. Accurate orders. Fast service. Consistency builds confidence, and confidence builds loyalty.

  3. 3

    Apple Invests in Knowledge

Customers don’t expect employees to know everything but they do expect them to know enough to help. Apple continues to earn high marks because customers feel they’re talking with someone who understands the product and can confidently guide them to a solution. Knowledge creates trust.

  4. 4

    Personal Connections Still Matter

Several regional grocery chains, including H-E-B and Publix, continue to receive outstanding customer experience ratings. Why? Because customers feel welcomed. Technology matters, but people still remember how they’re treated. A smile, a greeting, and genuine interest in helping someone are still competitive advantages. Never underestimate the power of making a customer feel recognized.

  5. 5

    Great Technology Supports Great People

The best customer-focused companies don’t use technology to replace people, they use technology to help people perform at a higher level. Automation handles repetitive work. Employees handle relationships. That’s exactly how AI and technology should work.

Surprising Finding

What This Means for You

Actionable Business Insights

Make Consistency Your Competitive Advantage

Customers shouldn’t have a different experience depending on whether they call, email, chat, or visit your location. Consistency creates confidence and confidence creates loyalty.

Empower Employees to Solve Problems

One of the fastest ways to improve customer experience is to eliminate unnecessary approvals. Give employees the authority to make reasonable decisions that help customers. When employees can solve problems immediately, everybody wins.

Don’t Chase Every Trend

It’s easy to become distracted by the newest technology or customer experience trend. Instead, ask yourself:

If you consistently answer “yes,” you’re already ahead of many competitors.

“The companies customers remember aren’t always the biggest or the most innovative. They’re the ones that consistently make life easier. Great customer service isn’t about perfection. It’s about being dependable, trustworthy, and easy to do business with.” Shep Hyken

The Bottom Line: You don’t have to compete with Amazon, Apple, or Chick-fil-A. You simply need to compete with yesterday’s version of your own customer experience. Look for ways to reduce friction, empower your employees, and make every interaction just a little easier than it was before.
